Blog snafu and calendar items

I was poking around some of my other blogs today - the day after Christmas - and noticed that this blog had a 'last post' date of 12/25. Well, that wasn't true. I hadn't actually put a post up here since 12/5 and thought it must be a mistake.

It sort-of was. You see, the blog counts itself as being published - as near as I can figure - any time there is a something new in it. And because there's a calendar embedded in the blog it sees all new entries as new posts.

Oddly, I haven't updated the calendar since the NogUp because many folks plan their own things around the holidays and I haven't taken the time to update stuff here. But to that end, I'm thinking about a new tack.

Going forward, I might do a few different things and want your opinions.

Should I...

Keep the calendar going as I had it - and update it weekly with new events?
Eliminate the calendar and just do posts on upcoming events and recaps of past events?
Embed calendars from other people - or provide just a link to their calendars?
Or something different?

Would love your input. Please leave a comment or send me a note on Twitter.

Thanks and happy holidays!

Sunday, December 5, 2010

What did you do today? It's often the question posed by people at home when you finish the workday. Or it's what people say to you at the bar when you're done at the office.

Well, today was a fun little jaunt into networking for me. I attended Boston Media Makers where I saw dozens of friends and colleagues including Steve Garfield, Joselin Mane, Adam Zand, Melinda Green, Reiko and Tom Beach, Lane Sutton and more.

The talk of the day was solving issues with DSLR (step up Adam Weiss), putting on the best events (like the MegaTweetup on Dec. 16 at NERD), and a lot of cool gadgets and gear (like the jacket worn by Phil Campbell with about a gazillion pockets and features).

In all, a great session at Doyle's. I'm looking forward to the next meeting --- on New Year's Day, so mark your calendar.

So, what did you do today? Or this week?

Fun Channukah Video

So, I was poking around the Interwebs and was directed to the movie here by Ari Herzog. It's a Channukah song. I welcome you to share interesting seasonal and event-relevant content here as well. Just leave a comment and we'll make it happen.

Thanks!

NogUp3 - 12 Bars of Xmas - MegaTweetup II

Check the calendar now. It's got a ton of great stuff on the horizon.

From the second installment of the wildly successful and all-for-charity MegaTweetup at the NERD Center in Cambridge, to our third installment of the NogUp (this year in Southie at Atlantic Beer Garden) to a little bar-hopping extravaganza called the 12 Bars of Christmas.

Hope to catch up with you this holiday season!

Back in Boston

Just put some wrap-up info on my social media blog about my recent trip (some say iRoadTrip) to the Gulf of Mexico. If you want to read the more technical and environmentally scientific portion of my journey, go see it at EDR's site.

But now that I'm back, I'm ready to share some great events in Boston that I'd like to attend and also get your thoughts on some of the best tweetups and social gatherings around town.

Please share in the comments or sign up to be a contributor.

I'll have the WithJeff calendar up to date later tonight.

New Orleans and the Gulf Coast

Watching events occur at home when I'm not physically able to attend is a bummer. I've kept the WithJeff calendar up to date, but as I remain onsite with the #ioilspill Project in New Orleans, I'm already looking ahead to upcoming gigs in Boston.

For example, the NomX3 crew is presenting at Mass Inno on August 11. And the 140 Conference is coming to Boston in September. There are now scooter meters in the streets of our fair city (and I'd like to do a video feature on that). And Boston Media Makers is going on tomorrow without me AND without Steve Garfield.

So, while I'm away and reporting in the heat of the Gulf, please add your special events right here so the folks at home can attend.

Chat soon!

Busy Week - Jeff Cutler - 2010 Tour de France - Planning for Oil

This week was madness. In addition to getting a NomX3 taped - or did we do two - I've been blogging the 2010 Tour de France and preparing for another Content Road Trip.

This time I'm not going with the iRoadTrip guys, but going on my own to create a ton of content in the Gulf of Mexico. I'm covering oil spill ramifications throughout the region and nationally.

As I prepare for that trip, I'm also thinking about upcoming events in Boston. The 140 Conference is coming as are regional Tweetups. In fact, we just had our inaugural South Shore Tweetup this week. More will be happening soon.

Got an event you want featured, recapped or just listed on the calendar? Leave that info in the comments here or find me on Twitter and let me know.

See you out there!

Tour de France 2010 - Breakfast in Somerville, MA

If you live in the Boston, MA area of the world, pure bliss has returned! On July 14 and 22, Redbones BBQ in Somerville, MA (at 55 Chester Street), will again be doing their TDF breakfasts.

These are sessions where you ride your bike (they have a bike valet at Redbones) to the restaurant and get to watch the Tour de France on TV with other like-minded fans and cyclists.

It's fun, energizing and tasty. I'll be at one or both of these fun events. Hope to see you there.

Scooter Parking in Boston

If you ride a scooter or motorcycle in the city of Boston, as of today there are SUPPOSED to be meters around the Back Bay for you to park at.

According to folks I talked to last night at the Boston Scoots ride, these meters were supposed to be in by today but are not in and there's no official word from the BTD as to when they will appear.

Word is that these meters - at spots at the end of blocks with room for four or five two-wheeled motorized vehicles - will cost only $.25 per hour with no limit (or a 10-hour limit).

It's good stuff, or will be when it happens, and I'll keep you updated on this issue.

Thoughts?

Fondue, The Shipyard and Dressing Up

This week we've got Fondue Monday, a Shipyard visit Tuesday, a #140Conf meetup with Jeff Pulver on Tuesday night, a dressy event with Emmi Sorokin on Wednesday at the House of Blues, a bunch of tech sessions and AdClub stuff on Thursday, and then NomX3 is filming at Sonsie on Friday at lunch. Holy. Crap.

What's on your plate this week?

Tuesday at Enterprise 2.0

Today's events (Monday) are nearly wrapped up, although there is an evening reception from 4:30-7:30 titled Evening in the Cloud. But I'm looking ahead at the sessions offered tomorrow at the Enterprise 2.0 Conference.

Unlike today's sessions which were about 3:15 long, the classes on Tuesday are quick-hit, one-hour sessions and there are a lot of them. Here's what I'm thinking of going to...

8AM - New Approaches to Breaking Down Information Silos
9AM - Keynotes
1PM - From Idea to Delivery: Apps Don't Deploy Themselves
also at 1PM - Socializing With Video: How Emerging Video Applications will Impact Enterprise Collaboration
2:15PM - Microsharing: It is All About the Tools. It it Not About the Tools.
3:30PM - You Say Social Media, I Say Community—Does it Matter?

Then there are attendee parties, and social media add-on Tweetups and also a boat trip and then some private events for media.

Hoping to run into Social Julio, Steve Garfield, Chris Brogan, Anne Weiskopf, Mike Schneider and others sometime during the show.

I'm over-scheduled, overstimulated and excited for the rest of the week. Are you here? What are you going to?

E 2.0 Conference - Westin Waterfront

I'm at the Enterprise 2.0 Conference in Boston right now and am live Tweeting it and blogging about it all week long. The event - find more here - has a cool exhibit floor and a good schedule of sessions.

I hope to get a lot out of this and enjoy some great networking, too. *The after-hours events are numerous and cool. See the calendar for more info - e.g. Bon Voyage Party.

Are you here at the conference?

What are you doing this week?

The Week Ahead (starting on Tuesday)

Sure, today is Tuesday but I've been busy. Had golf yesterday with Tyson Goodridge, Joe Cascio and a buddy from High School. We played at Plymouth Country Club and didn't win a thing. But we had fun...which is the goal of any event's organizer.

Want to have fun this week? Take a look at the calendar. It includes stuff like a chat with Rob Mondavi of the famous winemaker family. This chat is coordinated with a taping of NomX3 at Not Your Average Joe's in Medford, MA. And it's all free.

There are also about two billion other fun things happening here in Boston (and the burbs). And if you'd like to write about an event or want your stuff on the calendar, give us a shout. We're open to all contributions that are fun and local.

See you out there.

Guerrilla Marketing with Dinosaurs

Novell is at the Computex Show in Asia. Here's a photo from a colleague of mine at MichaelKwan.com.

Interesting strategy. I agree with getting anything or anyone that will get you to their booth. Good work Novell.

Some tidbits

Just saw that June 4 is National Donut Day.

Signed up for a fondue Tweetup - yes, it's on the calendar.

Made a commitment to be a Wicked Important Person at the Awareness Bon Voyage party.

And I'm trying to see if there's any room in my schedule to get to both of the Tour de France breakfasts at Redbones in Somerville.

What are you up to?

Wandering around Floriday...Thinking about Boston

I'm on my way back to the Northeast after a quick dash to the sunny Gulf Coast of Florida. I can't wait for all the great events on the docket for the next few weeks, and now that it's warm out here (aside from the brief rain), things are looking up for outdoor events, fun patio tweetups and tons of geolocation games all summer long.

Got an event you went to that you'd like to review? We accept submissions.

Got an event coming up that you want to pimp? Give us a fair account of the happenings (eliminate your bias as much as possible) and we'll probably run it here.

Just leave a comment or hit me with an email - jeff@jeffcutler.com

Thanks for reading!

Rain and Cats and Barcamp

Trying my hardest to get out the door this morning to Barcamp Boston #BCBos and I'm failing. I've got one cat scrambling across my body and interfering with my typing while the other cat - herpes cat - hides from me and his medication.

Barcamp is going to be great, regardless of if I make it there. If you're on the floor there, give a shout and leave a comment on who and what you saw. Have already heard from excited folks like Al Willis at the MIT Stata Center.

Have fun - hope to see you all soon.

Back from SXSW

Just returned from South by Southwest and had a great time. Networking was the order of the day and events where this could happen were too numerous to count. Bearing that in mind, I finally got back on the horse and updated the calendar here.

As always, if you want to share an event in detail, give me a shout. I'll add you to the author list. And if you have an event that's missing from the calendar, just leave a note in the comments or email me and I'll make sure it gets added.

Thanks!

Youth Film Festival at the MFA

Want to buy a child? Seriously. It will only cost you a bag of millet. Leila was sold...traded really. For a bag of food that would feed her family.

If you’re not interested in purchasing a child, what about children who work as many hours a day as they are old just to support their family.

Alcides parents—both parents—died of HIV/AIDS.

Are these tales put on the airwaves and television to tug at your heartstrings and empty your wallet? No. These are true stories put out by youth filmmakers to raise awareness.

As part of Adobe Youth Voices and the Youth Producing Change Event in Boston, ten young filmmakers were armed with digital cameras and their own creativity. They made films to expose human rights issues they faced or had seen in their community.

With issues ranging from child labor to police harassment, these films aired at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts this past weekend as the showcase series featured in Human Rights Watch Film Festivals in London, New York and San Francisco.

Made possible by The Adobe Foundation, Youth Producing Change is part of Adobe Youth Voices and is “designed to provide youth in underserved communities with critical skills they need to become active and engaged members of their communities and the world at large.”

In just over three years, 20,000 children in 30 countries have taken part in the Adobe Youth Voices training programs to create media for social change.

What’s that mean? It means you learn a little bit about Human Rights Watch. You learn about The Adobe Foundation. And you learn firsthand what kids already know.

In films that explored these topics...

Clean water is a basic human necessity, yet corporations seeking profit are purchasing community water supplies around the world.

Shocked by the claim that more than half of all rapes happen to people under 18, young filmmakers searched for the roots of sexual violence and call for change.

Each night 1,600 teenagers in New York City find themselves homeless. Clemins and Jackie, two formerly homeless teens from New York City shared their stories of overcoming adversity and their work to create a community of support around teen homelessness.

Using new media tools, kids shared these videos and then the event was publicized via Twitter and Facebook. From what I read and learned about these kids, the only thing more powerful than their videos is their resolve to address human rights issues.

Michelle Mann, Executive Director of the Adobe Foundation, said, “By calling attention to human rights issues, these youth are inspiring audiences worldwide and demonstrating the power to express ideas, engage stakeholders and effect change through digital media.”

Anyone can do this stuff, but these kids are inspiring because they got out and explored the world around them, then they got in front of the camera to share their thoughts, their pain, their stories.

Pictures...especially moving pictures...are more moving when they engage and tell a story that matters. The films that aired this past Friday at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston did just that.

You can find out more a couple of ways. Give a click over to Facebook... http://www.facebook.com/adobeyouthvoices or jump on Twitter and follow @adobeyv to see what else is happening with Adobe Youth Voices.

You can see images and learn more about Human Rights Watch at http://www.hrw.org/iff.

Wintry Mix

It's snowing again in Boston and that means people are inclined to stay in and fester. I urge you to get out, network and have fun in this weather because once the weather turns nice, everyone will jump on bikes and into golf carts for other entertainment.

The calendar here has been a bit haphazard because of my journalism assignments and travel, but we're getting back on track today. In fact, tonight has a few cool things on it and so do the days remaining in January.

Hope to see you out there.
